Summary

- The panel aims to draft a policy framework for key state institutions.
- A decision on autonomy will follow the committee's report within three months.

Pune's BJ Medical College is poised for a potential shift towards autonomous status, a move that could usher in significant administrative and structural reforms. This development follows similar considerations for medical institutions in Mumbai and Nagpur.
A dedicated seven-member committee has been established to review the feasibility of autonomy for prominent state-run medical colleges. The panel, chaired by former chief secretary Jayant Kumar Banthia, will focus on institutions including Grant Government Medical College in Mumbai, Government Medical College and Hospital in Nagpur, and BJ Medical College in Pune.
The committee's mandate involves assessing current administrative and academic frameworks, evaluating the need for autonomy, and exploring potential benefits by examining models like AIIMS and PGIMER Chandigarh. It will recommend governance structures, financial systems, and faculty service conditions.
Officials stated that the committee is expected to present its findings and recommendations within three months. Following the submission of this report, the state government will render a final decision regarding the granting of autonomy to these medical colleges.
