Summary
- A PhD student at BITS Pilani's Goa campus died by suicide.
- This marks the sixth student death at the campus since December 2024.
- A committee report cited 'suicide contagion' as a potential factor.

A 26-year-old PhD student at BITS Pilani's Goa campus allegedly died by suicide on Wednesday at his rented off-campus accommodation. Police have initiated inquest proceedings, with a purported suicide note stating no one was responsible.
This tragedy marks the sixth student death at the BITS Goa campus since December 2024. Following previous suicides in September 2025, a district-level monitoring committee was formed. The committee's report, submitted on February 2, noted that suicide is complex and cannot be attributed to a single cause.
The committee flagged 'suicide contagion' as a possible factor, a phenomenon where repeated exposure to suicide can increase vulnerability in at-risk individuals. They also advised caution regarding sensational reporting that could contribute to distress or imitative behavior among students.
Academic stress was identified as a probable trigger in at least three of the five previous cases investigated by police since December 2024. One death was linked to a personal issue, and another remains under investigation. The committee recommended expanding counselling capacity, preventive wellness initiatives, and faculty sensitization.
