Bihar's Language Academies: On the Brink of Collapse

Bihar's Language Academies: On the Brink of Collapse

Bihar's significant linguistic heritage is under threat as numerous language academies face imminent closure. Once vibrant centers promoting diverse languages, these institutions have suffered from administrative apathy for over a decade. Academies dedicated to Hindi, Maithili, Magahi, Bangla, Sanskrit, Bhojpuri, Angika, and South Indian languages are now critically understaffed and starved of resources.

The Bihar Hindi Granth Academy, established in 1970, now operates with only eight staff against 36 sanctioned posts. Similarly, the Maithili Academy, founded in 1976, struggles with just three staff members for 21 sanctioned positions, despite its popular publications. The Bhojpuri Academy and Magahi Academy are even more severely affected, with only two and one staff member respectively.

Despite Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's announcement in 2022 and subsequent statements by the Education Minister to unify and revitalize these academies, no substantial measures have been implemented. This ongoing neglect has left Bihar's cultural institutions in a dire state, with many operating from cramped spaces and lacking essential leadership.
