Barnsley SEND Space Cost Soars to £7.4m
5 Oct
Summary
- Projected cost for specialist primary spaces in Barnsley nearly doubled.
- Refurbishment at The Mill is more extensive than initially anticipated.
- Funding comes entirely from a government grant, not council borrowing.
The anticipated cost to establish specialized primary school spaces in Barnsley has escalated significantly, now nearing £7.4 million. This figure represents more than a twofold increase from initial projections.
The planned conversion of space at The Mill in Worsbrough Bridge will create 40 places for children with special educational needs and disabilities. This initiative aims to facilitate learning for pupils closer to their homes.
While children are expected to begin attending in September 2028, a council report indicates the refurbishment work is considerably more extensive than first assessed. Surveys and design work revealed a greater need for refurbishment, enhanced accessibility, and specialized equipment.
Consequently, building works and specialist fit-out costs have risen from £1.8 million to £3.6 million. Additionally, the estimated cost for a new site entrance and vehicle access route has climbed from £320,000 to £760,000.
Fees, overheads, and contingency allowances have also seen a substantial rise, from £420,000 to £2.34 million. Barnsley Council officers consider this overall figure a conservative estimate.
This vital project will be fully financed through a dedicated government grant, ensuring no additional borrowing is required from the council's funds, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
