AI Erodes Student Critical Thinking, Teachers Warn
2 Apr
Summary
- Two-thirds of teachers see decline in students' core skills.
- Voice-to-text technology discourages spelling practice.
- Many teachers oppose government AI tutoring plans.

A significant majority of secondary school teachers in England are observing a decline in essential student skills, attributing it to the increasing use of artificial intelligence. Two-thirds of surveyed educators report that pupils are losing ground in critical thinking, writing, and problem-solving. The shift is partly linked to technologies like voice-to-text, which reduces the perceived need for spelling.
Despite these concerns, the government is pursuing a digital revolution in schools, planning to introduce AI tutoring tools for disadvantaged pupils. However, a substantial portion of teachers, nearly half, oppose these plans. They worry AI could lead to job cuts and diminish the value of human instruction, particularly for students who require more than academic support.
While teachers express skepticism about AI's impact on students, many have adopted it for their own professional tasks. A large percentage now use AI for resource creation and lesson planning. This widespread use underscores the need for formal policies and training within schools to ensure AI is implemented safely and effectively for both staff and students.
