2 Oct
Summary
- Dutch educator spent 11 years independently studying Gandhi's charkha.
- New book explores charkha's potential neurological and developmental benefits.
- Personal recovery from brain surgery inspired resumed spinning and writing.
Dutch educator Miriam Haenen embarked on an 11-year independent inquiry into Gandhian thought and the spinning wheel, a dream she held for 18 years. Her journey began in 2015 in Ahmedabad, India, with an initial aspiration to study at Gujarat Vidyapith, though administrative issues redirected her path. This redirection led to an in-depth, personal investigation recorded in her new book, "The Thread of Life: The Mysterious Science of Charkha Spinning."
Haenen, who first visited India in 1997 to integrate Waldorf education authentically, found herself captivated by the charkha's 'magic' and the meditative process of spinning. She meticulously observed experienced spinners before attempting to spin herself. Her research proposes that the charkha's contrasting hand movements may foster concentration, inner discipline, and holistic development, drawing parallels with neuroscience concepts of bimanual coordination and brain hemisphere communication.
This exploration gained a deeply personal dimension after Haenen underwent brain-tumor surgery in Maastricht in September 2020. She resumed spinning the very next day, viewing her recovery as personal learning. Her book, praised for its experiential and spiritual nature, seeks to re-examine Gandhi's insights through a contemporary lens, connecting inner growth with principles of non-violence and social justice, though the charkha's specific neurological effects await controlled study.
