6 Feb
Summary
- Fisherman fatally attacked by crocodile after fleeing elephants.
- Victim was returning from fishing trip near Luangwa River.
- Zambia faces frequent human-wildlife conflict incidents.

A devastating incident occurred in eastern Zambia where a fisherman, Dean Nyirenda, aged 52, lost his life following a harrowing encounter. Nyirenda was returning from a fishing trip with companions near the Luangwa River when they were unexpectedly confronted by a herd of elephants.
In a desperate attempt to escape the charging animals, Nyirenda plunged into a nearby stream. It was there that a crocodile attacked, inflicting a severe bite on his right thigh. He managed to fight off the predator and drag himself from the water, but his friends' efforts to staunch the bleeding were unsuccessful, and he tragically died.
Wildlife officers confirmed deep bite wounds as the cause of fatal blood loss. Zambia grapples with frequent human-wildlife conflicts, with dozens of lives lost in recent years. The Luangwa River, a known habitat for a high concentration of Nile crocodiles, underscores the risks in the region. In 2023 alone, crocodile attacks accounted for 15 of the 26 recorded wildlife-related deaths in the country.
