Worker Suffocates in Concrete Tank Rescue Attempt

A construction worker tragically died on Wednesday morning at a site in Mootoli, Kozhikode, after collapsing inside an underground concrete tank. The victim, identified as 42-year-old Siraj of Puthukkudipoyil House, Palath, was removing wooden shuttering from the structure.

While attempting to rescue Siraj, another individual, Vishwanathan, from Chelannur, entered the tank but also experienced severe breathing difficulties. Vishwanathan was admitted to a private hospital in critical condition.

Fire and rescue services arrived to find Vishwanathan in distress. They successfully extracted him, administered first aid, and transported him to a hospital. Siraj was found unconscious and later pronounced dead at the Kakkodi family health center.

Authorities suspect that the lack of fresh air within the confined space, which measured approximately three meters by two meters and had only a small manhole for access, led to the fatality. Reports indicate that safety protocols were not adhered to during the entry into the tank.

Siraj is survived by his wife, Nasla.
