Forensic analysis, Shields' health background, and information from her relatives pointed to alcohol withdrawal seizures, stemming from alcohol use disorder, as the probable cause of death. Officials confirmed there was no indication of any crime committed against her.
The marks on Shields' body were thoroughly examined and determined to be the result of postmortem insect activity, dispelling any theories of strangulation or foul play. The head injury was described as minor.
