A devastating incident at Withernsea, East Yorkshire, resulted in the loss of three lives on January 2. A 15-year-old girl, Grace Keeling, was tragically swept out to sea in a matter of moments while taking photos near the promenade. Her mother, Sarah Keeling, 45, and a local man, Mark Ratcliffe, 67, entered the rough waters in a desperate attempt to save her but were overcome by the powerful waves.
The inquest revealed that Grace's friend witnessed the horrifying event, describing how Grace disappeared in a split second due to an unexpected, massive wave. Sarah Keeling entered the water trying to reach her daughter but was also caught by the relentless waves. Mark Ratcliffe, a local resident, was also lost while trying to assist.
The sea conditions were described as perilous, with witnesses and a fisherman of 40 years' experience noting waves as high as 12 feet and conditions rated eight out of ten for severity. The recovery operation for Sarah Keeling and Mark Ratcliffe was completed on the same afternoon, but Grace's body was found 13 days later, trapped among sea defence boulders. Mark Ratcliffe has been recognized as a hero for his courageous actions.
