A Wisconsin man died unexpectedly after collapsing during his first half marathon on Sunday morning. John Meise, 36, a father of four and dedicated runner for six years, fell near the 13-mile mark, less than 600 feet from the finish line of the Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon. Emergency medical personnel attempted lifesaving measures at the scene before he was transported to Froedtert Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office has not yet determined the cause of death, noting Meise had no known medical history. Meise is survived by his wife, Lauren, and their four children. His sister-in-law established a GoFundMe to support the grieving family, remembering him as a loving father and husband who made others feel welcomed and cared for. Race organizers extended their condolences, emphasizing their commitment to participant safety and noting this was the first fatality in the event's 44-year history. The race experienced its largest turnout this year, with approximately 6,000 participants.
