29 Aug
Summary
- An 85-year-old man's lifetime collection was destroyed by fire.
- The blaze started accidentally from a spark while mowing grass.
- A nearby elementary school closed due to smoke damage.

A devastating fire swept through a family's 17-acre property in the Town of Winton this week, obliterating a home and a lifetime's worth of possessions. The blaze ignited Monday afternoon when a spark from a lawnmower caught dry grass on the corner of Walnut Avenue and California Street, directly across from Winfield Elementary School.
Owner Charlie Gorden, 85, who had lived on the property since 1961, described the rapid spread of the fire, stating everything was gone by that evening. He acknowledged struggling with hoarding tendencies, noting the difficulty of parting with unneeded items. The property, a generational family holding with a house built in 1948, had faced previous warnings from the county regarding its upkeep.
Despite the loss of physical items like old cars, decorations, and books, Gorden emphasized that cherished memories of family holidays on the land were what he would miss most. The fire's impact extended to Winfield Elementary, which canceled classes for two days as the district replaced air filters and sanitized facilities due to smoke. The school is slated to reopen soon.
Fire crews have successfully extinguished the blaze. Gorden's family is now focused on the aftermath, including cleanup efforts and determining the next steps for the land. A GoFundMe has been established to support the family.
