Winnipeg residents are facing the aftermath of a severe storm that caused widespread damage and power outages on Sunday. As of Tuesday morning, about 1,500 Manitoba Hydro customers were still without electricity, a significant reduction from the initial 6,700 who lost power Sunday evening.
The River Heights and Westwood neighborhoods bore the brunt of the storm, with winds reaching 83 km/h, leading to downed trees and considerable destruction. While Westwood's power was restored Monday evening, significant damage in River Heights, including downed power lines and poles requiring tree removal, has prolonged the outage.
To aid those affected, the city has opened a reception center at the Corydon Community Centre's River Heights site. This center provides crucial amenities such as cellphone charging stations, free Wi-Fi, refreshments, and emergency mental health support.
Firefighters are conducting door-to-door checks in the most affected areas to ensure resident safety. Manitoba Hydro is urging the public to maintain a safe distance from downed power lines and to exercise caution with generators, ensuring they are used in well-ventilated spaces to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
