A significant wildfire ignited on San Marcos hill above Villa de Leyva on September 19, 2026, rapidly consuming hundreds of hectares. As of September 22, 2026, officials reported that up to half of the fire was under control, though estimates of the burned area varied. The blaze has dangerously approached the Iguaque sanctuary, a protected area critical for water regulation for numerous communities and revered in Muisca tradition.

The local government declared a public calamity, suspending classes and evacuating residents and hotel guests, with the municipal coliseum serving as a shelter.
Efforts to combat the fire involve four helicopters dropping water, but the full extent of damage to the sanctuary and surrounding properties remains unclear. Officials have not yet provided a timeline for full control or the return of evacuees, while a previous blaze in 2010 severely impacted the reserve.
