A 53-year-old man tragically lost his life in a suspected wild elephant attack on Saturday evening near the Muchiradka enclosure in Rekhya village, Uppinangady forest range. The victim, Balakrishna Gowda, was believed to be returning home from work when the attack occurred between 5:30 PM and 7:30 PM.
Forest department officials were alerted within an hour and located the body by 10 PM. Initial findings, including footprints, suggest the involvement of a lone elephant. A spot inspection was conducted by forest officials and disaster management teams.
Balakrishna Gowda's body was transferred to Belthangady hospital for a postmortem examination. The forest department plans to initiate an operation to track the elephant responsible for the attack. Officials confirmed that compensation would be provided to the deceased's family according to government regulations.
This incident follows a similar fatality in July of the previous year, when a 60-year-old man died from an elephant attack in the Kokkada area.
