Whidbey Island Firework Explosion Destroys Homes

A large-scale fireworks incident on Whidbey Island in Greenbank on Wednesday afternoon led to significant destruction and injuries. Approximately 700 pounds of fireworks detonated, obliterating two residences and damaging a third property. This powerful explosion injured five individuals, comprising two residents and three firefighters, although all are anticipated to recover.

Two of the injured firefighters have since been released from the hospital, while a third is undergoing hand surgery. The two residents sustained injuries and sought medical attention themselves. Authorities are investigating the cause, with preliminary findings pointing towards smoking materials being in proximity to the fireworks, which were reportedly acquired for an upcoming event.

Neighbors expressed prior concerns regarding the homeowner's actions, citing instances of burning toxic materials and a general disregard for neighborhood safety. Fire officials highlighted the inherent dangers of storing large quantities of fireworks at residential properties, emphasizing the unpredictability of such events. The homeowners are cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
