A severe thunderstorm packing a confirmed tornado struck Wheatley Provincial Park on Thursday afternoon, causing significant damage. The storm, which raced southeast at approximately 70 km/h, brought down numerous trees and limbs throughout the campground, necessitating cleanup efforts by maintenance crews. Power remained out into the evening.
Despite the violent nature of the storm, which prompted a tornado warning, park staff reported no injuries. While some campers experienced trees or branches falling near their sites, there was no major damage to trailers or tents. Approximately 100 to 150 campsites were occupied at the time, and most campers opted to remain, resuming normal activities like bonfires shortly after the storm subsided.
