30 Aug
Summary
- 210 road safety projects are implemented or planned in West Hartford.
- Vision Zero aims to eliminate traffic deaths by 2033.
- Reflective gear distributed to enhance night-time pedestrian visibility.

West Hartford is making significant strides in its Vision Zero initiative, a comprehensive effort launched in January 2023 with the goal of eradicating traffic fatalities and serious injuries by 2033. This year alone, 96 road safety projects have been finalized, focusing on enhanced protection for pedestrians, cyclists, and joggers. An additional 114 projects are currently under construction or slated for completion within the year.
These crucial safety measures address a concerning trend of fatal crashes involving pedestrians in recent years. West Hartford recorded two pedestrian fatalities in 2025 and three in 2024. To mitigate these risks, the town is implementing a variety of infrastructure improvements. These include roundabout enhancements, speed humps, raised crosswalks, curb extensions, and the installation of pedestrian refuge islands.
Further initiatives include illuminated no-turn-on-red signage and the widespread installation of rectangular rapid flashing beacons at key intersections. Neighborhoods are seeing reduced speed limits, with 25 mph zones established in the Charter Oak and Smith School areas. Recognizing that most pedestrian fatalities occur at night between November and February, the town has distributed 15,000 reflective vests and armbands since 2024 and encouraged nearly 400 residents to take a safe driver pledge.
