Fumes Evacuate South Jersey Walmart; Dozens Affected

An investigation is ongoing after irritating fumes led to the evacuation of a Walmart in South Jersey on Tuesday afternoon. Around 4:15 p.m., emergency services received multiple 911 calls reporting respiratory problems inside the store on Cooper Street. Upon arrival, fire personnel encountered nearly two dozen individuals exiting the building, experiencing irritation.

Nineteen people were transported to local hospitals for evaluation, with most reporting minor symptoms. One shopper described feeling throat irritation, dizziness, nausea, headaches, and tingling. Hospital staff discharged the affected individuals a few hours later, noting their symptoms were improving.

Hazmat and fire crews, alongside Walmart facilities staff, conducted a thorough check of the store but did not identify any hazards. The building was subsequently cleared for employees to deep clean before its planned reopening at 6 a.m. on Wednesday.

Authorities, including the police department, will continue to investigate the source and cause of the irritant. This will involve reviewing surveillance footage and examining any potential mechanical or systems issues within the facility. Walmart stated that customer and associate safety is a top priority and that they are cooperating with the investigation.
