14 Sep
Summary
- A detached garage fire in Waite Park was caused by a propane deep fryer.
- No injuries or fatalities were reported in the Tuesday evening fire incident.
- Fire departments advise deep fryers should only be used outdoors.
A detached garage in Waite Park became engulfed in flames on Tuesday evening, September 8th, due to a propane-fueled deep fryer left operating inside. The Waite Park and St. Cloud fire departments were dispatched around 7:15 p.m. and worked for approximately 90 minutes to suppress the fire, which was close to the residence and a neighboring garage.
Fortunately, no individuals sustained injuries or lost their lives in the incident. Fire officials highlighted that unattended cooking, especially with deep fryers, is a leading cause of residential fires. They issued a strong warning that propane deep fryers should exclusively be used outdoors in open, cleared areas, never inside garages or enclosed spaces.
Safety recommendations include never leaving the fryer unattended, keeping children and pets at a distance, and maintaining a clear area around the equipment. Combustible materials must be kept far from the fryer, and users are advised to turn it off completely and allow it to cool before attempting to move it. In case of a fire, immediate evacuation and calling 911 are recommended, avoiding the use of water on grease fires.
