Two children on Long Island recently sustained severe second- and third-degree burns due to a viral challenge on TikTok. The trend involved microwaving popular gel-filled fidget toys known as NeeDohs, which reportedly ruptured and exploded.
Nassau County Fire Marshal Michael Uttaro confirmed the incident, stating that the children, aged 4 and 8, were treated at a hospital. This follows similar reports of children being burned in Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, and New Mexico.
Medical experts emphasize the serious and potentially permanent damage such burns can cause to young people. The manufacturer of NeeDohs, Schylling, has stated that its labels explicitly warn against heating or microwaving the toys and is collaborating with social media platforms to eliminate content promoting this dangerous activity.
