Heavy rains have caused severe flooding and deadly landslides in Vietnam, resulting in at least four fatalities as of Saturday. The disaster has impacted four northern mountainous provinces, damaging more than 238 hectares of rice and other crops. Floodwaters also led to the loss of livestock and poultry.
Authorities have mobilized 500 rescuers to conduct search operations for missing persons and evacuate residents from areas identified as being at high risk of further landslides. Natural disasters occurring between January and June have tragically claimed at least 30 lives across the country and inflicted over $21.7 million in damages.
While Vietnam typically experiences heavy rainfall from June to September, scientists point to a concerning pattern of human-driven climate change intensifying the frequency and destructive power of these extreme weather events.
