Victoria Bushfires Ease: Structures Lost Near 500
13 Jan
Summary
- No emergency fire warnings are active across Victoria for the first time in nearly a week.
- Nearly 500 structures have been damaged or destroyed by devastating blazes.
- The Longwood blaze alone claimed a cattle farmer's life and destroyed hundreds of structures.

The bushfire threat in Victoria has diminished, with emergency warnings lifted for the first time in almost a week. While 12 major fires remain active, the immediate emergency phase has passed. The cumulative damage is substantial, with over 480 structures destroyed or damaged across the state, a significant increase from the previous day.
The Longwood fire has been particularly destructive, responsible for the loss of at least 343 structures and sadly, the life of cattle farmer Maxwell Hobson. This blaze has impacted central Victoria, destroying valuable farmland, vineyards, and livestock, underscoring the profound economic and personal toll.
Authorities are now shifting focus to recovery and preparing for the remainder of the fire season, with forecasts indicating a potential return of warm weather and increased fire risk late in January. Efforts are underway to reopen roads and support farmers in saving their livestock, many of whom have already suffered immense losses.
