Matthew Forrester, an army veteran and teacher from Lilburn, has been awarded the Carnegie Medal for Heroism. This prestigious honor recognizes his bravery in rescuing a 90-year-old driver from a vehicle engulfed in flames. The incident occurred in March 2025 when the driver, disoriented and driving off a cul-de-sac, crashed into Forrester's backyard.
The car became stuck on rocks, igniting the engine and rapidly filling the vehicle with smoke and fire. Forrester, who served a decade in Iraq, remained composed amidst the danger. He entered the smoke-filled car and successfully extricated the trapped driver, dragging him to safety just seconds before the car's engine exploded.
The rescued man, though not seriously injured in the incident, passed away two months later from an unrelated cause. A Gwinnett Firefighter nominated Forrester for the medal, highlighting the extraordinary degree to which he risked his life to save another. Forrester acknowledged the honor, stating he had never heard of the medal before but considered the nomination significant.
