Uttarakhand Floods: Drone Mapping Spots Vulnerable Areas
9 May
Summary
- Drone surveys identify flood-prone settlements in Uttarakhand's disaster zones.
- Early warning sirens and monitoring systems are being installed.
- Monsoon vulnerability is exacerbated by human activity and climate change.

Uttarakhand has initiated a comprehensive exercise to identify locations vulnerable to water influx, particularly in the districts of Uttarkashi, Chamoli, and Pithoragarh. Satellite imagery and drone mapping are being employed to assess risks in settlements susceptible to cloudbursts, stream overflows, and debris flow during heavy monsoons. A detailed report has been submitted to the Chamoli district administration following an initial survey.
Mitigation measures will be determined based on district-level reports, with the potential installation of instruments and monitoring systems in high-risk areas. The department is also monitoring water release from dams, assessing downstream impacts, and enhancing early warning systems. Sirens have been installed at several locations, and meetings with dam authorities are ongoing to ensure their widespread deployment.
The state's monsoon vulnerability is heightened by its fragile Himalayan terrain, steep slopes, glacier-fed rivers, and increasing human activities. Factors such as unplanned construction, deforestation, and urbanization weaken mountain slopes and obstruct natural drainage. Climate change further contributes to erratic weather patterns, increasing the frequency of extreme events like cloudbursts and floods.
