UK's First AI Camera Targets Risky U-Turns

A pioneering artificial intelligence camera has been deployed on the A30 Hayle bypass in Cornwall, marking its first use in the UK to identify dangerous U-turns. Vision Zero South West, a road safety partnership, announced the installation by National Highways, Devon and Cornwall Police, and Cornwall Council. This location was chosen due to a concerning history of 10 crashes involving U-turns since 2014, resulting in one death.
Authorities have observed that motorists have continued to make U-turns despite a ban. Adrian Leisk, head of road safety for the police force, stated the camera became necessary as drivers ignored the restrictions. Oliver Dash from National Highways added that the camera will primarily monitor traffic movements, highlighting that while most drivers are safe, some engage in risky behaviors, particularly during congestion. He stressed that U-turns on busy roads like the Hayle bypass are extremely dangerous.
