Water Woes: 18,000 Face Supply Cuts Amid Heatwave
28 May
Summary
- 18,000 people in Kent face water supply issues due to high demand.
- Reservoirs were drained over the bank holiday weekend due to soaring temperatures.
- Seven child deaths in swimming-related incidents occurred during the heatwave.

Eighteen thousand customers in Kent are currently facing intermittent water supply issues. This follows extensive draining of reservoirs over the recent bank holiday weekend, exacerbated by soaring temperatures. South East Water has advised residents to set aside water specifically for essential needs like drinking, washing, and cooking.
The company reported pumping over 660 million litres of water on Tuesday alone, a figure significantly higher than average daily demand. This surge in usage is directly linked to the record-breaking heatwave, which saw temperatures reach 35.1C in Kew Gardens on Tuesday, the hottest May day on record for England and Wales.
Amidst these water supply concerns, safety warnings have been issued by rescue charities. Seven children have tragically died in swimming-related incidents during the heatwave. Police have identified some of the victims, including a 12-year-old boy in Lancashire and a 15-year-old in Lincolnshire. Authorities are urging the public to exercise extreme caution near water bodies, noting that while air temperatures are high, water remains dangerously cold.
