On October 19, 2025, a powerful tropical storm named Fengshen, locally called Ramil, lashed the northern and central regions of the Philippines. The storm forced over 22,000 people to evacuate from flood- and landslip-prone villages, and has so far claimed 7 lives.
Fengshen blew away from the main northern Philippine region of Luzon into the South China Sea late on Sunday. The storm currently has sustained winds of up to 65 km per hour and gusts of up to 80 km per hour. The government's disaster-mitigation agency reported that one person drowned on Saturday in Roxas City, while five people, including two children, died when their hut was hit by a fallen palm tree in Pitogo town.
The Philippines, which is battered by about 20 typhoons and storms each year, is now bracing for Fengshen to cross the South China Sea on a course toward Vietnam. This comes as the country is still recovering from recent powerful earthquakes that left over 80 people dead and displaced thousands more.
