Trichy Bridges Crumble: City in Gridlock?
2 Aug
Summary
- Thennur road overbridge faces deterioration due to heavy traffic.
- Repair work is delayed because multiple other bridges are closed.
- Residents report worsening road conditions and increased potholes.

The Thennur road overbridge in Trichy, a crucial link between commercial hubs, is showing signs of significant deterioration. Repair work, estimated at Rs 40 lakh, is currently stalled because closing the bridge for strengthening would further disrupt traffic. This is particularly problematic as five other bridges in the city are already closed for redevelopment projects.
Residents are expressing concern over the bridge's current state, noting an increase in potholes that make access difficult for two-wheelers. With traffic diverted from other closed bridges, including heavy trucks, the Thennur RoB's structural weaknesses are becoming more apparent. The bridge, which is over 25 years old, requires comprehensive restoration, with damage observed in the joints and expansion elements of its three arms.
Officials have indicated that major redevelopment of the Thennur bridge can only commence after the railway's work on the Maris RoB is completed. The Maris RoB work is anticipated to conclude by September. In the interim, temporary restoration efforts are planned for the Thennur bridge.
