Trichy Highway Safety: Urgent Fixes Needed
9 Oct
Summary
- Officials inspected Trichy-Karur highway for accident prevention.
- Report on narrow highway infrastructure gaps due in two days.
- Solutions include straightening curves and adding streetlights.
A joint team, assembled by Trichy district collector Pratik Tayal, conducted a site visit on Friday to assess and propose solutions for preventing fatal accidents on the Trichy-Karur national highway. The inspection covered the NH stretch within the district, including a section managed by the state highways department.
Officials are preparing to submit a report within two days to the collector, highlighting infrastructure deficiencies on the narrow highway. This road is situated between the Trichy-Karur railway track and the Cauvery river, presenting unique safety challenges. Approximately 25 kilometers between Kudamurutti bridge and Pettaivaithalai were examined.
Preliminary findings suggest the need to straighten sharp curves that pose significant risks. Additionally, the inspection identified a lack of adequate streetlights and high-mast lamps on darker sections of the highway. While providing new lights is a one-time cost, establishing a robust maintenance system is crucial, with plans to collaborate with Panchayats for upkeep in rural areas.
