Summary
- Experienced triathlete Erica Fox disappeared while swimming.
- A witness saw a shark with what appeared to be a human body.
- Search efforts for the swimmer were suspended after 15 hours.

An experienced triathlete, Erica Fox, 55, is feared to have been killed in a suspected shark attack off California's coast. She disappeared Sunday afternoon near Lovers Point while swimming with the Kelp Krawlers group. One swimmer noticed a shark breach with what appeared to be a human body in its mouth.
First responders launched an extensive 15-hour search involving boats, drones, a dive team, and helicopters. Despite covering 84 square nautical miles, the search was suspended Monday evening. The Coast Guard extended condolences to Fox's family and friends following the tragic incident.
Fox was a seasoned athlete, having competed in triathlons for nearly 20 years. Despite previous shark incidents in the area, including one in June 2022, she was known for her compassionate views on sharks, advocating for terms like 'incident' over 'attack' and emphasizing humans as guests in the ocean.
