4 Jul
Summary
- Severe storm caused widespread damage across the Tri-State area.
- NJ Transit service experienced significant disruptions and suspensions.
- A building partially collapsed in Jersey City, with no reported injuries.
A severe storm struck the Tri-State area on Friday evening, leaving a path of destruction and severely impacting NJ Transit operations. Multiple rail lines, including the Morris and Essex, Gladstone Branch, Raritan Valley, and North Jersey Coast Lines, suffered suspensions due to debris and downed trees on tracks. River Line service also faced disruptions, with substitute bus routes arranged.
The storm's fury extended beyond public transit, with emergency crews responding to a partial building collapse in Jersey City. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in this incident. High winds also played a significant role, flipping an 18-wheeler on New York City's Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge.
Other areas, such as Clark and Plainfield, reported downed power lines and debris. Governor Mikie Sherrill issued a statement acknowledging the service impacts and urging residents to exercise caution and avoid non-essential travel. Service on some NJ Transit lines has since resumed with residual delays.
