On October 23, 2023, a tragic accident occurred in Baytown, Texas, about 25 miles outside of Houston. A police officer responding to an emergency call crashed into a minivan carrying a family, resulting in the deaths of two children and leaving three others critically injured.
According to the police, the officer, Michael Hightower, had a green light and the right of way when the collision occurred. The minivan, driven by a woman with five minors as passengers, was struck in the intersection. Two of the children, ages 8 and 10, succumbed to their injuries, while the three other girls, aged 16, 14, and 3, were hospitalized with multiple fractures, a brain bleed, and other serious injuries.
The community of Baytown has rallied to support the grieving family, identified as the Russells, through a GoFundMe campaign that has already raised over $55,000 to help with medical bills and other necessities. The local Little League has also organized a fundraiser to assist the family during this difficult time.
"This tragedy leaves us without words," said Police Chief John Stringer. "Our hearts are heavy with sorrow for everyone impacted. As a father, I feel this loss deeply, and my heart breaks for everyone involved."
