Summary
- Stuffed toys obscured driver's view before fatal pedestrian impact.
- Driver received suspended prison sentence for careless driving.
- Victim died the day after being struck by the vehicle.
A driver's failure to maintain a clear view, due to stuffed toys dangling from her rear-view mirror, resulted in a fatal pedestrian accident. Rosemarie Oszko, 65, struck 81-year-old John Nottingham on March 1, 2024, in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. The court heard that the toys significantly impacted her visibility.
Oszko was travelling on Dewsbury Road when she turned left as the traffic lights turned red, hitting Mr. Nottingham as he crossed. She stopped at the scene, but Mr. Nottingham tragically passed away the following day from his injuries. He had been crossing the road at the junction with Waterton Road.
At Leeds Crown Court, Oszko pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving. She was sentenced to eight months in prison, suspended for two years, and disqualified from driving for two years. Authorities emphasized that objects should never obstruct a driver's view of the road and other road users.
