Toxic Ammonia Leak Hospitalizes Dozens in Oklahoma

On November 12, 2022, a truck leak released toxic ammonia gas in Weatherford, Oklahoma, leading to a major emergency response. According to the latest information, dozens of people were hospitalized, and 11 are currently in critical condition.

Approximately 1,000 residents were evacuated from their homes, while another 500 to 600 people sheltered in place due to the hazardous chemical spill. The Weatherford Police Department had issued a shelter-in-place order for residents in the affected area, advising them to turn off their air conditioning and heating systems to prevent the chemicals from entering their homes.

Weatherford Police Chief Angel Orefice stated that the cause of the leak is still under investigation, but it appears to have been either a mechanical failure or a faulty seal on the truck. The cleanup effort is expected to take several days, as authorities work with the Environmental Protection Agency to safely dispose of the spilled chemicals.

Despite the severity of the incident, the police have since lifted the shelter-in-place order, and residents have been allowed to return to their homes. They have been advised to air out their residences by opening doors and windows, and to seek medical attention if they are feeling ill.
