Tornadoes Unleash Fury: Kentucky and WV Face Devastation

A band of extreme weather unleashed devastating tornadoes and record flash flooding across Kentucky and West Virginia on Tuesday night, trapping dozens and injuring several people. First responders in West Virginia found themselves overwhelmed by emergency calls as floodwaters reached unprecedented levels, necessitating attic rescues for trapped individuals.

In Kentucky, the severe weather manifested as multiple tornadoes, significant flooding, and landslides, causing widespread infrastructure damage, including the destruction of a bridge. Governor Patrick Morrisey responded by placing all 55 counties under a state of emergency. The threat of damaging winds also extended into New Jersey, New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

Officials in Buckhannon, West Virginia, described the flooding as "catastrophic" early Wednesday, with the Sand Run stream cresting at 10.63ft, surpassing a 1985 record. Reports from Upshur County detailed chaotic scenes of destroyed bridges, washed-out roads, and entire families in the water. Power outages affected tens of thousands across Ohio, Virginia, and West Virginia on Wednesday morning.

Meanwhile, preparations were underway in Mississippi and Louisiana for Tropical Storm Bertha, expected to bring heavy rain and winds. However, the National Hurricane Center noted the storm's appearance had deteriorated, predicting further weakening before landfall.
