On Monday, July 20, the National Weather Service in Green Bay issued a tornado warning for several Wisconsin counties, including Marathon, Langlade, Menominee, and Shawano. The warning was in effect from 7:43 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Central Daylight Time.
Meteorologists detected severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes moving across the region. These storms were located near Weston and south of Antigo, moving eastward and southeastward respectively at speeds of 20 to 30 mph. Impacts could include dangerous flying debris, destruction of mobile homes, damage to roofs, vehicles, and trees.
Residents were strongly advised to seek immediate shelter. The NWS recommends moving to an interior room on the lowest floor of a well-built building, away from windows. For those caught outdoors or in vehicles, the advice is to find the nearest substantial shelter and protect against flying debris. If driving, do not attempt to outrun a tornado, and seek sturdy refuge off the road. As a last resort, lying flat in a ditch or culvert and covering your head is advised.
