A two-year-old girl has died in Galicia, Spain, following a tragic incident where she was left in her father's car during unseasonably high May temperatures. The child succumbed to heatstroke after spending several hours in the vehicle in Brión.
Reports indicate the father was distracted by a phone call and forgot to drop the toddler at nursery on his way to work. The alarm was raised when the mother went to collect the child from nursery and discovered she had never arrived.
Brión town council has declared two days of official mourning and will hold a minute's silence. Spain is currently experiencing exceptionally high temperatures, with forecasts reaching up to 38C (100F) in some areas.
This heat spell, though not technically a heatwave, is expected to last until the middle of the following week. Spain is increasingly exposed to climate change effects, experiencing more frequent heatwaves and forest fires, with summer temperatures arriving earlier than in previous decades.
