10 Oct
Summary
- Captain Rostron navigated perilous ice fields at high speed.
- The Carpathia's radio operator uniquely heard the Titanic's distress call.
- Musicians played as the Titanic sank, a testament to Edwardian pride.
In the early hours of April 15, 1912, the RMS Titanic struck an iceberg. The RMS Carpathia, captained by Arthur Rostron, was the only nearby vessel to receive its distress call, a fortunate event as other radio operators were asleep.
Rostron immediately turned his ship around, pushing its engines to the limit through a dangerous iceberg field to reach the disaster site. He successfully rescued over 700 survivors, a significant logistical challenge given their dire condition.
Among the rescued were members of the Titanic's orchestra, who are reported to have continued playing as the ship sank. One such musician, John Frederick Preston Clarke, was later recovered with his violin.
Rostron's heroic actions earned him a knighthood and a US Congressional Gold Medal, solidifying his legacy as a rescuer who navigated immense peril to save lives.
