Monsoon Alert: Officials Gear Up for Flood Preparedness
5 Jun
Summary
- Southwest monsoon preparations reviewed across the district.
- Officials directed to monitor dam water levels and discharges closely.
- Temporary relief shelters to be readied with essential facilities.

District Collector Anand Mohan has overseen disaster management drills and reviewed monsoon preparedness across Tirunelveli district on Friday. Anticipating significant water influx into Papanasam and Manimuthar dams due to the southwest monsoon along the Western Ghats, officials are on high alert for potential flooding in the Tamirabharani river basin.
Authorities are instructed to maintain continuous surveillance of water levels in dams and manage discharges to prevent breaches in irrigation channels. The Public Works Department will monitor dam influx and outflow 24/7, sharing data with district officials. Forest department teams will track rainfall in the Western Ghats and stream flow.
Preventative measures include inspecting and strengthening irrigation tanks, and clearing storm water drains in urban areas. Vulnerable low-lying regions are being identified for preemptive action. Safe buildings are being designated as temporary relief shelters, requiring them to be equipped with drinking water, sanitation, and medical personnel within a week.
Rescue teams, including volunteers and trained personnel, will undergo refresher training. The Fire and Rescue Services will prepare rescue equipment, while the Tangedco will ensure readiness of power supply infrastructure. Public Health and Highways departments are also stocking necessary supplies and inspecting bridges and culverts.
