Tibet Rocked by Twin Earthquakes
22 Oct
Summary
- Two earthquakes, magnitude 7 and 5, struck Tibet recently.
- The quakes occurred within 40 minutes of each other on Thursday.
- A prior magnitude 5.2 earthquake also hit China the same evening.
Tibet was struck by two significant earthquakes on Thursday, occurring within a 40-minute span. The first, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake, hit at a depth of 173 km, approximately 489 km north-north-west of Arunachal Pradesh's Pandin. This was shortly followed by a magnitude 5.0 earthquake at a shallower depth of 15 km, located about 323 km north-north-west of Arunachal Pradesh's Basar.
These seismic activities took place weeks after the region was affected by severe flash floods and landslides along the Nepal-Tibet border in August, which caused widespread devastation. Additionally, on the same evening, a magnitude 5.2 earthquake registered in China, roughly 505 km north-north-west of Arunachal Pradesh's Pangin.
