Tragic River Plunge Claims Three Teen Lives

Three teenagers have tragically died following a car submersion incident in the River Wear, Sunderland. The black Audi A3 veered off the road near Wearmouth Bridge shortly before 1:30 PM yesterday, entering the water with four occupants.
Tragically, Jackson Duke, 17, and Luke Etheridge and Zara Shaw, both 16, were recovered from the river. Jackson and Luke were from Sunderland, while Zara was from Houghton-le-Spring. Their families have posted heartfelt tributes.
A 17-year-old male managed to escape the sinking car and was arrested at the scene. He is currently in hospital receiving treatment for non-serious injuries and remains in police custody. Northumbria Police are investigating the circumstances and do not currently believe other vehicles were involved.
