Thailand Floods: 33 Dead, 10,000 Displaced

Widespread flooding in southern Thailand has claimed 33 lives across seven provinces, with officials reporting over 10,000 residents displaced. The deluge, caused by torrential rains since last week, has submerged streets and homes in the tourist hub of Hat Yai, prompting authorities to declare a state of emergency in Songkhla province. Rescue efforts are ongoing, with boats, jet skis, and military trucks used to evacuate stranded individuals.

The military has mobilized significant resources, including an aircraft carrier and helicopters, to assist in rescue operations and transport patients to hospitals. In Songkhla province alone, more than 10,000 people have been evacuated. University campuses have been transformed into temporary shelters, and food distribution centers are operational to support flood victims, capable of providing up to 20,000 food boxes daily.

While Thailand typically experiences heavy rainfall during its monsoon season from June to September, experts point to human-induced climate change as a factor intensifying extreme weather events. The unpredictable nature of these conditions poses increasing challenges for disaster preparedness and response in the region.
