- Fire at Marathon refinery caused a smoky plume, triggering the order.

A shelter-in-place order affecting Texas City residents was lifted on Sunday morning after a fire at a Marathon refinery was successfully extinguished. The order, issued around 10 a.m. on Sunday, was initially put in place for areas between Bay Street and SH-146 due to a reported fire at the Marathon facility.
As the situation evolved, the affected zone was narrowed by police to residents located between 14th Street and 34th Street. Officials from the Texas City Office of Emergency Management confirmed at approximately 11:05 a.m. that the fire had been put out. Shortly after, around 11:10 a.m., city officials announced the termination of the shelter-in-place directive.
The initial order was a precaution taken due to a smoky plume emanating from the fire and prevailing southerly winds. Importantly, authorities have reported no injuries associated with the incident. Furthermore, air monitoring conducted in the vicinity has not indicated the presence of any hazardous chemicals.
