A tragic road collision in St Johnston, Co Donegal, has claimed the lives of two 18-year-old friends from Derry: Daniel Cullen and Caoimhin Porter. The incident occurred around 11:15 pm on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, when the Vauxhall Corsa they were travelling in collided with a Volvo FH 500 lorry on the main Lifford-Derry road.
The two teenagers were pronounced dead at the scene and a local hospital, respectively. A third 18-year-old male, the driver of the car, sustained serious injuries and was transported to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. The group had been returning to Derry after a trip to Asda in Strabane.
Local clergy and community members have expressed deep shock and offered support to the bereaved families. The Shantallow Community Centre opened its Youth Wing to provide grief counselling. The R236 road, known as a collision blackspot, was closed for investigation by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.
Gardai are appealing for witnesses, particularly those with dash-cam footage from the area between 10:45 pm and 11:45 pm on Tuesday, February 24, 2026. Information can be provided to Letterkenny Garda Station or the Garda Confidential Line.
