Teens Critical After E-Moto, Truck Collision

Two teenagers were in critical condition on Labor Day after their electric motorcycle collided with a truck in Bloomfield Township, Michigan. The incident occurred just before noon on September 7th when the two 13-year-old boys, riding together on an e-moto on the sidewalk, were struck by a southbound Ford F-150 at the intersection of Telegraph Road and Hickory Grove Road.

Both boys sustained critical injuries and were transported to separate hospitals, with one later transferred to a Beaumont facility. Authorities reported the truck driver remained at the scene and was cooperating with the investigation. Witnesses indicated the truck driver had a green light at the time of the collision.

This crash further highlights the dangers associated with high-powered electric vehicles. Michigan law defines vehicles capable of exceeding 28 mph with motor assistance as mopeds or motorcycles, requiring specific registration and equipment for road use. Some e-bikes, often referred to as 'e-motos,' can reach speeds up to 90 mph, making them unsuitable for sidewalks and bike lanes due to their rapid acceleration and potential to cause accidents.

The growing prevalence of these powerful electric devices has prompted discussions and actions in several Metro Detroit communities to implement stricter regulations or outright bans in certain areas to enhance public safety.
