A 16-year-old swimmer, Sarit Ghosh, lost his life at a Rabindra Sarobar swimming pool, prompting an immediate police investigation and the indefinite closure of the Lake Friends Club. Ghosh, an accomplished swimmer with eight years of experience, was reportedly practicing underwater breath-holding techniques when he collapsed on Friday evening.
The preliminary post-mortem report suggests death by drowning. However, investigators are awaiting histopathological test results on blood and tissue samples to definitively determine the cause, specifically to ascertain if he suffered a cardiac arrest. The youth's family, residing in Dhakuria, has filed a complaint seeking a thorough probe into the circumstances.
In response to the complaint, authorities sealed the swimming pool and suspended club operations. Six trainers on duty during the incident have been questioned, and the club has provided lists of swimmers present that day. Relatives from other states are expected to arrive for the cremation, which was scheduled for Sunday.
