A teenage girl is recovering after a frightening rattlesnake encounter while mountain biking in Newbury Park two weeks ago. Bailey Vanden Bossche, 14, was riding on the Wendy Trail when she fell into bushes and was bitten by a rattlesnake. Initially unaware of the bite, her condition rapidly deteriorated with symptoms like facial tingling and hearing loss.
Her friend managed to contact Bailey's father, who located them and called 911. Firefighters hiked to their location and transported Bailey to the hospital, where she received anti-venom treatment. Her grandfather, a former firefighter, described the ordeal as terrifying, noting she was the third person bitten that week.
Medical professionals emphasize seeking immediate help if bitten by a rattlesnake, advising to keep the affected area still and below heart level, without applying ice or attempting to cut the wound. Nationally, the CDC reports 7,000 to 8,000 rattlesnake bites annually in the U.S., with approximately five fatalities.
