A harrowing rescue unfolded at Seabright Beach in Santa Cruz on Saturday, July 25th, when a 16-year-old lifeguard saved a 10-year-old boy from treacherous ocean conditions. The lifeguard, identified as Ryder Williams, was seen in viral footage heroically bear-hugging Nathaniel Rai as he fought against powerful 10-foot waves and strong currents to bring the child to safety.
Nathaniel's father, Sumit Rai, who was in Dallas at the time, recounted his son's terrifying experience. Nathaniel had lost his footing in shallow water and was pulled into the ocean, losing consciousness. Despite the dangerous conditions, Williams plunged into the water, risking his own life to save the boy. Other beachgoers assisted in securing them until they could be brought ashore.
Paramedics evaluated Nathaniel, who suffered no serious injuries but had sand in his lungs. His father described the event as deeply traumatizing for his son, who is still processing the near-drowning. Sumit Rai expressed profound gratitude to Williams, stating his actions were beyond repayment.
Ryder's father, Shane Williams, shared his immense pride, highlighting his son's determination and years of swimming and water polo training as preparation for the rescue. He emphasized that Ryder viewed saving the boy as his duty.
