A tragic accident at Sherwell Farm in Plympton, Devon, resulted in the death of 17-year-old Luke Searle. The incident, which occurred on June 22, 2022, involved a malfunctioning bale wrapping machine. Luke, an agricultural engineering student, was operating the machinery when a fault developed.
An inquest heard that Luke had not placed the equipment in a Safe Stop mode before attempting to investigate the issue. Consequently, the dispenser arms of the bale wrapper unexpectedly restarted, trapping Luke and causing severe chest and abdominal injuries. Despite immediate medical attention on-site, his injuries proved fatal.
The jury recorded their findings at Exeter Coroner's Court, noting that power should have been isolated and the engine switched off before any repairs. Luke was described as a sociable and well-liked young man who was passionate about his studies and future in farming. His family and the farm owners were close friends, adding to the community's grief.
